Tools to Help Prevent Infections

As an advocate, your No. 1 job is to create a safe, germ-free environment for your loved one so he or she can heal without picking up an infection.

If we had our way, every hospital room would be loaded with all forms of anti-bacterial cleansers. Every table would have a big box of wipes, an anti-bacterial spray and several bottles of anti-bacterial gel. Who could possibly ignore them?

So stock up, share freely, don’t be afraid to insist. And post reminder signs, too!

Use the simple products shown below for priceless rewards. And remember:

  • Keep your loved one’s skin free of bacteria.

  • Don’t let anyone touch your patient without washing their hands properly. Watch this video!

  • Don’t let any medical instruments, lines or leads/wires touch your loved one without first being cleaned with alcohol.

  • Wipe down all hospital surfaces with anti-bacterial wipes. Clean again after every touch by anyone, including you, all visitors, every nurse, doctor or patient aid of any kind.

  • Use disposable toothbrushes (discard after every use) and electric shavers which are less likely to nick the skin—every break in the skin is a door to infection.

These simple craft items are great for making signs such as “Thank You for Washing Your Hands!”

  • What’s the Harm in Health Care?

It's a fact: 1-in-3 hospital patients is accidentally harmed every year in U.S. hospitals.

300,000 patients die by accident too -- equal to 3 jets crashing every single day of the year.

We have smart, caring nurses and doctors -- but hospital care is complex. Resources are strained. And everyone suffers when patients are harmed.

  • The solution? Simple Checklists!

Every patient needs someone with them in the hospital to be their "quarterback for care" -- but very few of us are prepared.
